Incubating Duck Eggs: Lemon Drop’s Amazing Story

Incubating Duck Eggs: Bad News in the Incubator

Out of our experience trying to incubate duck eggs comes the story of Lemon Drop the Duck. The incubation story is a bit sad, but Lemon Drop’s story is one full of miracles and joy.

Inside we had the incubator running trying to hatch out twenty-five duck eggs. Six were determined infertile within a few days. This left nineteen to hatch. When we candled the eggs we could see some growth. It was very exciting to see the progress of nineteen little ducklings in the eggs. This is where our excitement ends for this batch of eggs. The short version of this story is that none of the duck eggs hatched. We don’t know why. Continue reading Incubating Duck Eggs: Lemon Drop’s Amazing Story

HovaBator Genesis 1588 Egg Incubator

We finally did it! We are now the proud owners of our very own HovaBator Genesis 1588 incubator. In the past when we needed to incubate eggs we either borrowed a friends incubator or we put eggs under a broody hen.

Thank you! to our friends that were so kind to lend their incubator to us. That was an amazing gift. We appreciate that very much. This year we are hoping to hatch duck, chicken and quail eggs. With all this activity we figured it was better to get one of our own. Continue reading HovaBator Genesis 1588 Egg Incubator

Duck Dangers

Duck Dangers

We have ducks.

I love having ducks. In fact, I have a post called 5 Reasons to Want Ducks. They are loads of fun to watch and they produce for you.

Add Carbon: Deep Litter Method

Chicken Run Deep Litter Method

Do you want an easier way to help keep clean chicken runs? Add carbon.

Clean. That really is a relative word. My runs are rarely ever “clean”, but adding carbon to the chicken runs helps neutralize the negative affects of the chicken and duck manure.

This is commonly called the Deep Litter Method for managing chicken manure.

5 Reasons To Want Ducks

5 Reasons To Want Ducks

This is a short list of reasons why I love my ducks. Ducks are a wonderful addition to the farm. When people visit they are attracted to the ducks. We have three breeds on the far. It all started with a visit to the local feed store in the Spring time. My little girl just couldn’t go home without a duck. The baby Rouen duck was our first. Later we ordered the Australian Spotted ducks. As a bonus, Holderread Waterfowl Farm & Preservation Center included a couple Indian Runner ducks.

Here is the video produced on the Daddykirbs farm about our ducks. Continue reading 5 Reasons To Want Ducks
