How To Make Fermented Hot Sauce

Homemade Fermented Hot Sauce

This experiment in fermentation was fun. Last night I had hot sauce on my dinner. I kept thinking “Will this make me sick?”. We are so brain washed by our culture to believe if it doesn’t come out of a plastic wrapper then it is bad. I’m working on clearing my brain of this kind of thinking, but it lingers. … and no, I did not get sick. It just tasted yummy. Continue reading How To Make Fermented Hot Sauce

Incubating Duck Eggs: Lemon Drop’s Amazing Story

Incubating Duck Eggs: Bad News in the Incubator

Out of our experience trying to incubate duck eggs comes the story of Lemon Drop the Duck. The incubation story is a bit sad, but Lemon Drop’s story is one full of miracles and joy.

Inside we had the incubator running trying to hatch out twenty-five duck eggs. Six were determined infertile within a few days. This left nineteen to hatch. When we candled the eggs we could see some growth. It was very exciting to see the progress of nineteen little ducklings in the eggs. This is where our excitement ends for this batch of eggs. HovaBator Genesis 1588 Egg Incubator

We finally did it! We are now the proud owners of our very own HovaBator Genesis 1588 incubator. In the past when we needed to incubate eggs we either borrowed a friends incubator or we put eggs under a broody hen.

Thank you! to our friends that were so kind to lend their incubator to us. That was an amazing gift. We appreciate that very much. This year we are hoping to hatch duck, chicken and quail eggs. With all this activity we figured it was better to get one of our own. Continue reading HovaBator Genesis 1588 Egg Incubator

Kitchen: The Home’s Heart

Kitchen

Just think about that word for a minute. What images or memories do you go to when you think of kitchen? I’m going to guess that most of us will have fond memories of family events and special times with mom. There is just something really special that happens in the kitchen.

Food is so fundamental to who we are. Our very lives depend on it. Much of our culture is centered on the kinds of foods we eat and how it’s prepared. Families bond around preparation of food, and this happens in a kitchen. Continue reading Kitchen: The Home’s Heart

Duck Dangers

Duck Dangers

We have ducks.

I love having ducks. In fact, I have a post called 5 Reasons to Want Ducks. They are loads of fun to watch and they produce for you.

Most of the time these cute little critters stay out of trouble and are easy to handle. They free range really well, but sometimes they find things.

Of all the duck dangers on our farm I never even considered this. Where did she find this thing? You know, you worry about predators, disease and unhealthy diets… but not normally THIS on the farm. Continue reading Duck Dangers
