Homemade Salsa – Easy How To (video and written recipe)

I love making Homemade Salsa! Over the last few years I’ve gotten better at it. My wife, Mamakirbs, has even said… out loud… “you make really good salsa.”. That’s when I know I’ve arrived at something good.

This post is to compliment the video that I recently posted on YouTube about making Homemade Salsa.

Homemade Salsa Ingredient list:

Tomatoes –  Enough to make 2 quarts after chopping/blending
Onions – I used 5 medium sized. That equaled about 1/3 the volume of Tomatoes.
Peppers – Hot or Sweet (or both). I used 2 large Jalapenos.
Garlic – 5 cloves (give or take for your taste)
Cilantro – a good handful (optional… left out of the video demo)
Lime Juice – 1/2 cup
Chili Powder – 1 Tbsp
Cumin – 1 Tbsp
Salt (I prefer Himalayan Pink Salt) – 1 heaping Tsp

Directions (watch the video!)

  • Chop and/or blend Tomatoes until you have 2 quarts volume.
  • Pour Tomatoes into stock pan and put on medium heat.
  • Chop/blend garlic cloves, onions and peppers. This should be about 1/3 of the total volume of Tomatoes.
  • Add Onion blend to stock pot. Stir in.
  • Add Spices – Chili Powder, Cumin, Salt. Stir in.
  • Add Cilantro if using. Stir in.
  • Cook on medium heat long enough to reduce mix to desired consistency. Cook longer for thick salsa, shorter for runny.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Add in Lime juice

Canning tip – use that time while cooking the salsa to prepare your canning supplies and heated jars. You’ll put hot salsa into hot jars.

  1. Hi Mr. Kirbs,
I enjoy your tutorials. I’m making another batch of acv, according to your directions, here in Istanbul. Today I bought 20kilos of apples. But- I can’t find any glass containers bigger than the one you show on the video.
    1. I’m guessing I should not use a strong NEW plastic garbage can ?
    2. For 45 lbs of apples with a very small mother, would u suggest I add about 5lbs of sugar.
Thank you for your advice. God bless your family and farm.

    1. Wow, that’s fantastic! My suggestion is to NOT use plastic at all for brewing your vinegar. I’d rather make smaller batches in glass. Others have reported making ACV in 5 gallon plastic buckets, but I would always be concerned about the chemicals leaching into my vinegar due to the acidity of the brew. Now… I’m not a scientist so I’m only sharing my feelings on the subject and nothing that I can prove. To answer your question about sugar: I’m going to assume that there are 3 apples per pound. You have 45 lbs of apples which will be about 135 apples. Using a rough formula of 1 teaspoon per apple and 48 teaspoons per cup… there are approximately 2 cups of granulated sugar per pound. You would need approximately 1.5 pounds (3 cups) of sugar. … gosh, I hope I did all that math right! LOL
