Mexican Honey Wasp: Good or Bad?

Mexican Honey Wasp: Small Honey Makers that are not Bees

Much like a honey bee the Mexican Honey Wasp does make their own version of the golden sweet nectar filled deliciousness called HONEY.

Recently I posted this image on my Instagram Feed.

Mexican Honey Wasps
On a call to collect a swarm of honey bees we discovered that they weren’t bees at all. They were Mexican Honey Wasps.

  1. I have one of these nests in my tree at home and there is one at my work as well. So that is two more for San Antonio, TX.

  2. I’m in north central SA. There is a Medican Honey Bee nest about the size of two basketballs between me and my neighbors house. Do you know anyone who will remove it? It is in the tree about 30′ up in the air.

  3. We have a nest in our trees, but it shows no movement of the wasps. We would really like to remove it but do not want to chop tree off, nest is pretty high up.

    1. I’m in corpus Christi tx , today vector control killed a Mexican honey wasp Hive and all the wasps in it, very sad day for me 😢😢we need to stand up for these little guys ,educate people!! It’s important for our survival as human beings, I love to eat food. without bees and wasps were in trouble!!

  4. There is a nest by the helipad at Stone Oak Methodist in San Antonio! and late to the game but you can check out beeremovalsource.com for a list of local bee removal services.

  5. I collect intact abandoned nests of wasps of various species. I am always looking to add more types of nests to my collection and I have yet to get any from the Mexican Honey Wasp. If anyone down in south Texas knows of one or has one that’s abandoned or might be in the near future I would really like to talk about it if you are willing to do me the best favor and cut the branch its attached to off and stick it in a box and ship it to me then I would really appreciate it and be eternally grateful. Thank you.

  6. Found one just yesterday in a cedar bush (juniper) in my front yard. It’s almost perfectly round and a least as large as a beach ball. I now wish I had some citrus trees for them to pollinate and to predate larvae.

    1. Hey Todd, I believe they are just listed first on this list. The pain scale on the upper right shows them listed as a 2.

  7. Universal City, TX.
I have one of these just 5 feet from my front door in my hedge. They are quite docile. I bumped into it several times with my lawn mower on Sunday and nothing. My wife just touched the hedge to point out that there was a bald spot on top. BAM! one of them nailed her. Then they started swarming.

  8. I got a nest who is about 1 month ago. It’s on a shrub 6 feet above ground . I would like removed

  9. Hi! I live in Central Queensland Australia and I am 95% sure I found one of these guys in my garden. I took clear photos of him to identify with an app, almost certain it is a Mexican Honey Wasp, however I couldn’t find any confirmation that these bugs are in Australia. Is there anyone who can look at the photos and let me know for sure? I don’t want to ask any local councils in case they decide it is a pest. We grow lots of citrus and avocado in this area and I can’t see how these wasps would be a problem here. Cheers.

  10. I have a MASSIVE nest on my property near Campbellton. This thing is a monster. It’s over 2 feet tall at least 18″ wide. I’m going to measure it at some point!
