6×8 Harbor Freight Greenhouse Assembly

I am very excited for this years garden! I have a greenhouse! 6×8 harbor freight greenhouse assembly. This is the first greenhouse I’ve ever owned. It’s not very big, but it should give me a nice place start my seeds and over winter some of the plants. My small Lemon tree will appreciate that.

These Harbor Freight deals can be pretty good. This greenhouse was on sale for $299 and they allowed me to use another 20% coupon on top of that. I was going to build my own greenhouse from scratch, but the cost savings here changed my mind.

This was from my garden last year. I have dreams
of greater success this year. My greenhouse is
bolstering my confidence! 🙂

Best of all, now that I have it I can SAVE MONEY! I used to buy all my plants for the garden, but now I can start from seeds. Plants can cost $4 each. A seed packet is usually around $1. Each seed packet can start 50 plants or more.

6×8 harbor freight greenhouse assembly video

In this video you will probably notice that I can hardly contain myself 🙂 I feel like a little kid with a new club house or something. Only here… I am inviting you into my club, not keeping you out! LOL.

After my introduction I have a series of video clips that show how the greenhouse went together. I don’t think you should use this as a stand alone “how-to“, but it might assist you in the process of building.

I wanted to share with you how I started my tomato seeds in the greenhouse too. I really don’t know what I’m doing so forgive my mess! This video shows that process.

Most of my tomato seeds this year were purchased from +Gary Pilarchik at The Rusted Garden.

You won’t find a nicer guy to buy seeds from 😉 He specializes in heirloom tomatoes.  I chose to use the heirloom tomatoes this year because I’d like to learn how to save seeds for myself. By the way, Gary has videos on his blog about how to do that.

After the building and planting and the time it takes me to get a blog post up… here is an example of a little tomato seed that decided to love me back.

My little girl wanted to join in on the fun so she started one of the black sunflower seeds from the bag of chicken scratch. She grew some last year too 🙂

We started a row of these in the raised beds too. We read that Sunflowers make Cucumbers taste better so we will start the Cucumbers near these.
I loved in elementary school when we got to start Sweet Potatoes in little cups! I decided to try it again here in the greenhouse.  These are holdovers from the very few that I grew last year. These will be planted in the Hugel Beds up by the Orchard.

    1. I have a new Facebook page called: ” Harbor Freight Green House Sharing Group “. One of our members posted a link to this page . We are an open group come visit us as we all will visit this page.

  1. Finally got around to reading the full post. I’m amazed you find the time not only to do all this, but to slow down and record it! Here’s to a greenhouse that will provide years of satisfaction and savings LONG after it has paid for itself in cheaper, high quality food!

    1. Andrew, my list of projects is so long… I just keep chipping away at it. My Galaxy S3 has been an amazing help in documenting it all. I have it on me all the time so I just whip it out to snap pics and short video clips.

  2. Looks awesome! Did you build your greenhouse from one of those greenhouse kits like here? Was it a difficult process to put up? I really want to put up my own greenhouse, but am a bit intimidated by the scale of the work. Your pictures and videos are inspiring, though. Maybe this year, I’ll take the plunge! Thanks for sharing!

  3. Good morning Blake,

Hope all is well with you and your family… just wanted to say again how much I appreciate the video you developed on the 6 x 8 greenhouse, on YouTube… as I mentioned, this was the ‘best’ explained video, on this subject, that I was able to find on YouTube… also, this blog appears to be a great source of general gardening and small farming information as well… looking forward to following your updates on the projects you’ve posted on this site… thanks again… Ken

  4. Blake,
Thanks so much for taking the time to create the Youtube video on “How to build a Harbor Freight Greenhouse”. My husband and are not very handy, but your video allowed us to complete a job that we probably wouldn’t have been able to with the directions given. We really appreciated it and I’m certain we referred to the video more than the directions themselves! The greenhouse is up and looks great!

  5. The first word that comes to my mind when I think about the video that Blake made for the HF 6×8 greenhouse assembly, it’s altruistic. I truly couldn’t have done it without him! Thank you so much.

  6. Hi Blake,
I had been thinking about buying this item and after viewing your excellent video my mind was made up to purchase the HF 6×8. I hope it comes out as well as your’s come spring. You did a great job and the greenhouse seems a good product for the price keeping in mind it’s not top of the line, or and trying to make it into something else that some others have posted.
I am looking forward to Springtime to assembly it from the help of your video. I do have a few questions. Since the instruction manual is dated prior to 2004 when the pressure treated wood process changed and now can cause aluminum
to corrode did you build the short wall out of regular or PT
lumber? If you did you use PT is any type of barrier between the wood and aluminum sill needed? Overall how is the greenhouse at this time and any thoughts in general. You said the GH is 16″ taller is that just the short wall or short wall plus the 4×4 base? Thanks again and good luck with your farming.
    Lenny

    1. I did use PT lumber. I’ll have to see if it is having any affect to the aluminum. You got me on that one, I wasn’t eve aware that there was an issue with PT and aluminum. The greenhouse is holding up fine structurally. Occasionally you need to check the tightness of the screws on the inside. I have lost a couple when it rattles in high winds. Since noticing this I have replaced and tightened nuts and all seems well. The plastic is getting cloudy, but still does the job. I imagine that the panels will need replaced in a couple years more. The short wall is 16″ if I remember correctly. I guess that would make it 19.5″ on the 4×4, but with the mulch of the garden and the sand on the inside, the top of the 4×4 is flush to ground level… if that makes sense. Basically after laying the 4×4 on the level ground and building the GH I put 3.5″ of sand on the inside and about 3.5″ of mulch all around on the outside… essentially burying the 4×4.

  7. I purchased the 6×8 greenhouse from harbor freight. We moved and the instruction manual was lost. Would it be possible to purchase a copy of said instruction manual. If so then let me know the cost and where to send money order. Thanks I love
your videos. They will be helpful very much to me.
