Raising Australian Spotted Ducks

I can remember our first experience buying chickens. We were at the local Tractor Suppy store during “Chick days”. All of us gathered around the large metal stock tanks just full of all kinds of chickens. peep peep peep peep!!! it was so cute and so fun.

My daughter was 6 or 7 at the time. She gravitated over to the tanks with baby ducks. I said “No ducks, We came here for chickens.” I meant it… yes I did. We left with 4 ducks.

That was the beginning of a love affair for my daughter. Those first 4 ducks were the hook that she needed to want to start a duck raising and breeding project. It’s a couple years later now, she’s almost 10. We are now just over one week into her project of raising Australian Spotted ducks.

I gotta say, she’s a natural. She gives those baby birds all the attention in the world. She feeds them, she makes sure they have water and clean bedding. If she doesn’t know something she opens up the ipad and researches it until she is an expert.

I’ll be “duckumenting” the process here. Here are a few photos and videos to see our first week.
