Tomato Garden Maintenance

So you’ve established a nice raised bed garden area for your Tomatoes! Yes, congratulations! I hope you have many years of good times reaping the reward of fresh home grown tomatoes. There isn’t much better than harvesting from your own garden… big or small.

I’m glad you are here with me. Here are a few tips for the Tomato Bed that will possibly help maintain those wonderful plants… and hopefully increase your yield.

Mulching

Adding mulch in your garden beds can help with weed control and water retention. I prefer Cedar mulch for my Tomato gardens. The Cedar is naturally a reddish color that the tomatoes love. There are several benefits to this mulch:

  • stays in place when watered
  • retains water in the bed
  • great weed suppression
  • helps in disease control by preventing splash up
Add a bit of organic compost around base of plant after mulching to give the plants a little boost of nutrition.
Check out this video to see how I do this.

Build Tomato Cages

I don’t like the tomato cages that are typically sold at big box stores or in the grocery store plants sections. They tend to be too small and flimsy. Wire fencing can be used to make a much more suitable structure for those robust tomato plants. Take a minute to hang out with me and I’ll show you how I made mine.

Pruning the Plant

Keeping the bottoms of the Tomato plants up off the ground helps keep the plants healthy. There are undesirable spores and pathogens that can live in the dirt below the plant. When it rains or you water those spores can splash up and land on the leaves of the plant. This can lead to diseases spreading throughout your beautiful tomato plant that you worked so hard for. It’s best to take care of this earlier on once the plant gets some nice foliage on top, but if you waited …it’s not to late to get in there and get’r done.
