Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big Continue reading Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

My First Permaculture Hügelkultur Garden Bed is one of those things that hasn’t worked out like I thought it would. At first it Continue reading My First Permaculture Hügelkultur Garden Bed: What Am I Doing Here?

I’m a relatively new blogger… in fact I’m relatively new to “the simple life”. My family moved out of the city to the country so we could pursue this “simple life”. I do have a goal to be more self reliant. Actually I like the idea of being more “community reliant”.  There is a lot of “self” in there, but living a life of complete self reliance would be to alienate ourselves from those around us. I know sometimes we think we want that but I kinda like the idea of being able to go ask the neighbor for some eggs if I need it. Likewise that neighbor can come to me. This is a relationship. We were designed for such community.

I do whole heartedly believe that we need to, as a culture, return to a more simple life. Simple in that we don’t run around all the time in pursuit of the next great thing. Always hungry to consume with little consideration of how that prevents us from appreciating this life and the love of our families. Truthfully the simple life isn’t always easy. Sometimes it downright hard. Clearing a fence row, stretching a fence, sowing a field, butchering chickens, being patient with the kids while you are trying to teach them important lessons on the homestead.  Yes, those things can be a chore… but so rewarding and when the day is done you get to sit with your family and admire what you did. There is satisfaction and healthy pride in seeing what you can do by working together.

Our first experience collecting honey from our hive.

Growing food and raising chickens are my two biggest passions here on our little homestead. These are two important skills for my family if we lose the ability to go to the store. Even more than being concerned about losing that ability… I like the idea of feeding my kids things that are grown without chemicals.

With every new sprout from a seed I planted and with every chick that hatches on our farm I understand why so many homesteaders are willing to give up the rat race. We here on the daddykirbs farm are learning more every day about living a life that is full of reward. We are so far away from self reliance, but we are a little closer every day.

Moments like this make it all worth it.

Thank you for being a part of my growing experience by hanging out with me here on my blog 🙂

Beekeeping: First Year Frustrations

This year is my first year to be a beekeeper. I took that class and got all geared up. Feeling unbeatable I
pushed through the Summer doing my little inspections. My thoughts mostly was that I just need to leave the bees alone. I didn’t want to disturb them too much. They have been doing this for a very long time, I don’t need to get in there and mess it up for them.

Well, something went wrong. I’m not sure what exactly went wrong, but it appears that I lost my Queen. The hive seemed so Continue reading Beekeeping: First Year Frustrations
