Out of our experience trying to incubate duck eggs comes the story of Lemon Drop the Duck. The incubation story is a bit sad, but Lemon Drop’s story is one full of miracles and joy.
Inside we had the incubator running trying to hatch out twenty-five duck eggs. Six were determined infertile within a few days. This left nineteen to hatch. When we candled the eggs we could see some growth. It was very exciting to see the progress of nineteen little ducklings in the eggs. This is where our excitement ends for this batch of eggs. The short version of this story is that none of the duck eggs hatched. We don’t know why. Continue reading Incubating Duck Eggs: Lemon Drop’s Amazing Story→

We finally did it! We are now the proud owners of our very own HovaBator Genesis 1588 incubator. In the past when we needed to incubate eggs we either borrowed a friends incubator or we put eggs under a broody hen.
Thank you! to our friends that were so kind to lend their incubator to us. That was an amazing gift. We appreciate that very much. This year we are hoping to hatch duck, chicken and quail eggs. With all this activity we figured it was better to get one of our own. Continue reading HovaBator Genesis 1588 Egg Incubator→

I love having ducks. In fact, I have a post called 5 Reasons to Want Ducks. They are loads of fun to watch and they produce for you.
Most of the time these cute little critters stay out of trouble and are easy to handle. They free range really well, but sometimes they find things.
Of all the duck dangers on our farm I never even considered this. Where did she find this thing? You know, you worry about predators, disease and unhealthy diets… but not normally THIS on the farm. Continue reading Duck Dangers→

This is commonly called the Deep Litter Method for managing chicken manure. The deep litter method is a simple and effective way to manage chicken manure and bedding in a poultry farm. This method involves allowing the chickens to live on a deep bed of litter, such as straw, Continue reading Tired of Chicken Manure Mess? Try the Deep Litter Method→

This is a short list of reasons why I love my ducks. Ducks are a wonderful addition to the farm. When people visit they are attracted to the ducks. We have three breeds on the far. It all started with a visit to the local feed store in the Spring time. My little girl just couldn’t go home without a duck. The baby Rouen duck was our first. Later we ordered the Australian Spotted ducks. As a bonus, Holderread Waterfowl Farm & Preservation Center included a couple Indian Runner ducks.
